Dev Deepawali also known as Dev Diwali is the festival of Kartik Poornima, celebrated in Varanasi, India. It takes place fifteen days after the major Hindu festival of Diwali. It is believed that on this day, the Gods descend on the Earth to bathe in the Ganges.
The tradition of lighting lamps on the Dev Diwali was first started at the Panchganga Ghat in 1985. The steps of all the ghats are lit with more than a million earthen lamps in honor of Goddess Ganga. On this auspicious day, the houses are decorated with lamps and colored designs on doors. Devotees set afloat oil lamps are on the river, praying to the Goddess for salvation.
