The Four most widely used pest control methods are:
- Chemical Pest Control – Chemical pest control is using pesticides, fungicides and bactericides to control pests and diseases. Pesticides may be contact, stomach or systemic poisons. Pesticides are often classified according to the pest they are intended to control. For example, insecticides are used to control insects; herbicides to control plants; fungicides, fungi; rodenticides, rodents; avicides, birds; and bactericides to control bacteria. One of the most regularly used chemicals in pest control is boric acid, which is considered safer alternative than more hazardous synthetic chemical pesticides. Pyrethrin and pyrethroids are pesticides used by exterminators. These are active ingredients found in sprays used by experts and only by licensed pest exterminators. This is a chemical pesticide that is used in eliminating pests because it can paralyze pests and will die afterward.
- Biological Pest Control – Biological control or biocontrol is a method of controlling pests such as insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases using other organisms. It relies on predation, parasitism, herbivory, or other natural mechanisms, but typically also involves an active human management role. There are three general approaches to biological control; importation, augmentation and conservation of natural enemies. Each of these techniques can be used either alone or in combination in a biological control program. Biological control agents are expensive to find. The greatest expense is during the field survey and early testing stage which must be conducted overseas. Suitable agents may not even exist. Potential agents are also expensive to test for specificity.
- Electronic Pest Control – Electronic pest control is the name given to any of several types of electrically powered devices designed to repel or eliminate pests, usually rodents or insects. In summary, ultrasonic pest repellers emit high-frequency sounds that manufacturers claim reduce household pest infestation, but laboratory tests have shown that the majority of such devices do not work as advertised, in violation of FTC guidelines. Ultrasonic devices cannot penetrate into or behind cupboards, drawers, wardrobes, furniture or walls where pests actually nest and breed. Some are sold specifically to repel rodents. However, there is little data that these devices repel insects or are effective in rodent control. Rats and mice emit high-pitched sounds and may communicate using these sounds. Devices that use sound that humans can hear typically have no effect on the rodents.
- Physical Pest Control – Physical pest control is a method of getting rid of insects and small rodents by killing, removing, or setting up barriers that will prevent further destruction of one’s plants. These methods are used primarily for crop growing, but some methods can be applied to homes as well. For example, traps – for pest animals and insects; mulches – for weed management; steam sterilization – for soil disease management; or barriers – such as screens or fences to keep animals and insects out. Traps and bait stations are the most common of all the physical pest control methods. Traps are a great method for capturing small animals like rodents and insects. If you want traps to work effectively, they have to be checked regularly and any pests removed.
The most common method of pest control is the use of pesticides—chemicals that either kill pests or inhibit their development. Pesticides are often classified according to the pest they are intended to control. However, they do have cons. Problems with chemical control include residues, crop damage, killing of beneficial insects and poisoning of humans and their animals.
