Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also called Machine Intelligence.

It is the field of study which tries to make computers “smart”.

John McCarthy came up with the name “artificial intelligence” in 1955.

AI is used to create computer programs that can learn, recognize speech, solve problems and think logically.

We all have used AI. Examples of AI in everyday life are – Google Maps, Flight Autopilot, Online Shopping, Cab Bookings, Social Networks, Spam Detection, Fraud Prevention.

Another popular example is Amazon’s Alexa is an AI-powered personal assistant that accepts voice commands to create to-do lists, order items online, set reminders, and answer questions.

Smart speakers allow you to integrate Alexa into your living room and use voice commands to ask natural language questions, play music, order pizza, hail an Uber, and integrate with smart home devices.

Alexa TV Stick works on basic TVs and converts them into Smart TVS allowing you to watch any program you want by saying the title.

How does Alexa work?
When you ask Alexa, “What’s the weather going to be like today,” the device records your voice. Then that recording is sent over the Internet to Amazon’s Alexa Voice Services which parses the recording into commands it understands. Then, the system sends the relevant output back to your device.

On mobiles also we use smart personal assistants with built in AI like Google Assistant which recognizes speech and program which converts the audio into text.

Lyra is a cloud-based personal assistant app for your smartphone, tablet or computer. With Lyra you can have Intelligent conversations, anywhere, anytime, and in everyday language.

With Lyra much is possible:

  • Find what you need using Google, Wikipedia, Bing, Yahoo, Yelp, YouTube and others.
  • Find the best restaurant or bar in town.
  • Quickly find locations on Google Maps.
  • Translate anything to Spanish, German, French, Italian and over 70 other languages.
  • Get weather forecasts for any location.
  • Connect with social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Most users start with some fun inputs. This could be asking Lyra to“Tell me a joke”, “Give me my horoscope”, “I want a riddle” or exploring Lyra’s personality – “Will you marry me?” “Where do you live”, “I hate you” etc. Lyra is chatty, and has a distinct personality

Lyra also tracks your likes – for instance, if you have asked to find a particular food type (say, Italian) many times, then when you ask an open question like “I’m hungry”, without specifying a restaurant type, she will suggest the nearest pasta and pizza place.

Advantages of AI

  • Error Reduction
  • Difficult Exploration
  • Daily Application
  • Digital Assistants
  • Repetitive Jobs
  • Medical Applications
  • No Breaks

Disadvantages of AI

  • AI machines are complex & costly.
  • AI can not replicate Human Intelligence.
  • Unlike humans, artificial intelligence cannot be improved with experience.
  • AI lacks originality and creativity of a Human Mind.
  • Replacement of humans with machines can lead to large-scale unemployment.

AI Weapons – Many countries are currently developing AI based Autonomous Weapons Systems to achieve greater speed, accuracy, persistence, precision, reach and coordination in wars.

Such intelligent systems will be used to identify and classify threats, prioritize targets, and show the location of friendly troops and safe distances around them.Artificial intelligence in wrong hands is a serious threat to mankind in general. It may lead to mass destruction. Also, there is a constant fear of machines taking over or superseding the humans.

The usage of AI powered drones, submersibles, missiles and robots is growing and unless a global treaty is formulated to regulate the use of AI in weapons, it could turn against humans in the future.

Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks. Stephen Hawking

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer sciences that emphasizes the development of intelligence machines, thinking and working like humans.

The overall research goal of artificial intelligence is to create technology that allows computers and machines to function in an intelligent manner. The general problem of simulating (or creating) intelligence has been broken down into sub-problems.

Artificial intelligence uses machine learning to mimic human intelligence. The computer has to learn how to respond to certain actions, so it uses algorithms and historical data to create something called a propensity model. Propensity models will then start making predictions (like scoring leads or something).

Types of Artificial Intelligence

There are four types of AI or AI-based systems: reactive machines, limited memory machines, theory of mind, and self-aware AI.

Artificial Intelligence enhances the speed, precision and effectiveness of human efforts. In financial institutions, AI techniques can be used to identify which transactions are likely to be fraudulent, adopt fast and accurate credit scoring, as well as automate manually intense data management tasks.

Everyday uses of Artificial Intelligence:

    • Smartphones
    • Smart Cars and Drones
    • Social Media Feeds.
    • Music and Media Streaming Services.
    • Video Games.
    • Online Ads Network.
    • Navigation and Travel.
    • Banking and Finance.

Future of Artificial Intelligence

AI would have a low error rate compared to humans, if coded properly. They would have incredible precision, accuracy, and speed. They won’t be affected by hostile environments, thus able to complete dangerous tasks, explore in space, and endure problems that would injure or kill us.

Scientists warn of an AI takeover is a hypothetical scenario in which artificial intelligence (AI) becomes the dominant form of intelligence on Earth, with computers or robots effectively taking control of the planet away from the human species.

The thing that’s going to make artificial intelligence so powerful is its ability to learn, and the way AI learns is to look at human culture. AI is neither good nor evil. It’s a tool.

AI is the ability for computer algorithms to approximate conclusions without direct human input.

AI works by combining large amounts of data with fast, iterative processing and intelligent algorithms, allowing the software to learn automatically from patterns or features in the data.

In Transport sector, Artificial intelligence helps companies in the transportation industry to ensure the safety of the public when using their services. Safety of citizens using public transport in urban areas can be improved by tracking crime data in real-time.

Self driving Cars – AI is used to enable the cars to navigate through the traffic and handle complex situations. Also, with a combined AI software and other IoT sensors, such as cameras, it becomes easier to ensure proper and safe driving.

In Business sector, AI can support three important business needs: automating business processes, gaining insight through data analysis, and engaging with customers and employees.

In Marketing, Artificial intelligence is used to anticipate your customer’s next move and improve the customer journey.

In Agricultural sector, AI bots in the agriculture field can harvest crops at a higher volume and faster pace than human laborers. By leveraging computer vision helps to monitor the weed and spray them. Thus, Artificial Intelligence is helping farmers find more efficient ways to protect their crops from weeds.

In Entertainment sector, AI will help automate certain production procedures. AI can offer a platform that can automate tasks such as breaking down scripts, story boarding, generating shot-lists, creating schedules, and managing movie budgets.

In Medical sector, Artificial intelligence (AI) uses computer techniques to perform clinical diagnoses and suggest treatments.

Surgery – While current robotic surgery utilizes AI to determine patterns within surgical procedures to improve best practices, there are instances of real time AI within robotic surgery. There are a few robotic surgical systems on the market, some use AI while others are just an extension of the surgeon without AI support.

In Banking and Finance sector, Artificial intelligence in finance is transforming the way we interact with money. AI is helping the financial industry to streamline and optimize processes ranging from credit decisions to quantitative trading and financial risk management.

AI DronesAI is paving the way for a new generation of self-flying drones, which can carry out tasks without requiring a human operator. The possibilities are endless, ranging from automatic safety inspections, to 24/7 delivery services.

In War – Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has reached a point where the deployment of autonomous weapons systems is — practically if not legally — feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.

Autonomous weapons will possibly create an automated battlefield. At the outset of a war, interconnected AI systems would pick out targets, from missile launchers to aircraft-carriers, and choreograph rapid and precise strikes to destroy them in the most efficient order.

Lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) are a type of autonomous military robot that can independently search and engage targets based on programmed constraints and descriptions.

The overall research goal of artificial intelligence is to create technology that allows computers and machines to function in an intelligent manner.

It is important to analyze how AI will effect our survival. Is it going to help economy and business? Will it create new jobs or take away jobs, affecting large populations?

AI, robotics and other forms of smart automation have the potential to bring great economic benefits, contributing up to $15 trillion to global GDP by 2030 according to PwC analysis. This extra wealth will also generate the demand for many jobs, but there are also concerns that it could displace many existing jobs.

Yes, robots will replace humans for many jobs, just as innovative farming equipment replaced humans and horses during the industrial revolution. However, in the wake of these changes, humans will be needed to create and deliver value in brand new ways for brand new business models.

Studies suggest the impact of AI on jobs in the near future will not be significantly more disruptive than the impact of automation in the past.

Based on the nature, type and amount of training required for these jobs, AI machines are most likely to perform these jobs in the coming years:

  1. Telemarketers
  2. Book-keeping clerk
  3. Benefits managers
  4. Receptionists
  5. Couriers
  6. Proofreaders
  7. Computer support specialist
  8. Market research analysis

Jobs AI Can’t Replace

  • Human Resource Managers
  • Sales Managers
  • Marketing Managers
  • Public Relations Managers
  • Chief Executives
  • Event Planners
  • Writers
  • Software Developers

Jobs the Robots Are Actually Creating

  • Data detective
  • Bring-your-own IT facilitator
  • Ethical sourcing officer
  • Artificial intelligence business development manager
  • Master of edge computing
  • Walker/talker
  • Fitness commitment counselor
  • A.I. assisted health care technician

However, it is important to understand that without the right political, economic and ethical framework conditions there is a risk of uncontrolled development and a negative impact of AI.
